FAW Jiefang Completes Real-World Trial of Sodium-Ion Powered Heavy Truck

Chinese truck maker FAW Jiefang, in partnership with Hina Battery, has successfully completed a comprehensive 7-month real-world trial of a heavy-duty truck powered entirely by sodium-ion battery technology.

During the rigorous testing period, the vehicle covered more than 9,300 miles (15,000 km) across a wide variety of operating environments and challenging weather conditions.

The heavy truck relies on a massive 339-kWh sodium-ion battery pack. This alternative chemical composition is being heavily explored by researchers and manufacturers as a significantly lower-cost and highly stable alternative to traditional lithium-ion batteries.

Engineers highlighted the battery's impressive climate resilience, noting that it retains more than 90% of its usable capacity at freezing temperatures as low as -20°C, while maintaining solid operational performance down to -40°C.

This successful road trial marks an important milestone toward the commercial viability of sodium-ion energy storage systems within the heavy-duty commercial transportation sector.
